Kyra
Brown,
songwriter and guitar strummer, started singing in church a million years
ago, and until about the age of 8. Her musical career paused for a few
years to deal with the regular childhood dramas and traumas, then picked
up again with the random choice of playing clarinet in the 6th grade marching
band. That lasted 2 weeks. Since the flute was much prettier and shinier
and didn't require sucking flat wooden sticks, she decided this would
be the instrument of choice. Throughout her junior and senior high school
musical career, she added piccolo, french horn, and keyboards. The only
singing performance during that time was a short stint as the coronor
munchkin in her high school's version of "The Wizard of Oz".
She would also occasionally belt out some Janet Jackson with her girlfriends
at the local swimming pool. At age 15, she took another long music career
pause to deal with the regular teenage dramas and traumas. At age 21,
she moved to San Francisco from the Midwest and soon was singing back-up
in a band called Kranky. She
quickly moved to lead and has been singing in band after band ever since..her
own and others, as both lead and back-up singer. She picked up the guitar
soon after picking up singing in the rock band way, and has been playing
ever since. She's also picked the flute back up again in the last few
years and whips it out now and then, along with a little red accordian
among other toys.
